#China, #Beijing. Perceiving the world’s injustices and its harshness, capturing it first in the midst of the urgency of key moments of history, and witnessing through photography – this has been my role, my very inspiration for several decades. Perceiving the world has also meant, over the course of the years, taking the time to see its soft, rounded edges, smiles and the enthusiasm of humanity, the poetry of a landscape or the vibrant colors of a street scene. These signs of life also enrich the sometimes bitter visual memories of conflict. My fifteen-year-old son and I were at the heart of this initiatory journey from Peking to Paris. In Peking, I sometimes rediscovered my solitary breath as a photographer as I set out in the evenings to capture the heartbeats of the city. #Azerbaidjan, #Quba, #Gyrmyzy #Gasaba (« Red Village ») In these days of the celebration of Passover (Jewish Passover) commemorating the Exodus from Egypt and the emancipation of the Hebrews, I remembered this privileged moment shared between representatives of the Muslim and Jewish communities in Azerbaijan on the occasion of the Easter. The Jewish people celebrate Passover to commemorate the liberation of Jews from slavery under the Pharaohs in ancient Egypt. The Red Village is considered the world’s only all-Jewish town outside of Israel and holds the greatest compact population of Jews out of all post-Soviet countries. #pessah #passover #jewish #muslim #share #easter #religion #tolerance #aztagram #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety

#Azerbaijan, Road from the Khinalig (Xinaliq) Village to #Gabala (#Qabala) The Mourning Totem The view, the sinuous road winding its way to the horizon, incited one to reflect upon life. The beauty of the place was obvious, inspiring, exhilarating. There, the colorful totem brought to mind the finality of our lives – the death which lies around a bend in the road, where we leave a conspicuous trace in the eyes of the living. The view along the drive from the Khinalig Village to the Gabala Region. Located on a summit in the Caucasus Mountains, the northern village is referred to as “an island in the mountain” since is the highest and most remote village in Azerbaijan. The village dates back at least 5,000 years and has remained virtually unchanged. The population of approximately 1,200 people belongs to the Kettidt minority. They have preserved their unique language (Kettish) and way of life and believe that they are the ancestors of Noah. Text written by Rachel Deghati. #Azerbaijan, #Ismayilli Region, #Ivanovka Village In Azerbaijan, while working on a long term assignment, I found a very specific and interesting tradition. This picture belongs to a series of photo reports on the Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities of Azerbaijan, who inhabit the same land. This unique exhibition sheds light on the incredible assimilation of diverse religious groups all driven by the desire to share in a mutual respect that is not present in other countries. At a Sunday “sobraniye” or service, the Molokan pastor leads the traditional prayer. Their prayer house has no icons or ornaments because they believe in worshiping God who cannot be seen. The Molokans, known as “milk (moloko) drinkers,” are Christian Russians who refused to adhere to the fasts and rituals of the Russian Orthodox Church. After being expelled from Russia, they have struggled to preserve their 400-year-old way of life in Azerbaijan in the face of emigration and the lack of social and economic support. The Ivanovka village is home to the last group of prosperous Molokans in the Caucuses due to their preservation of a Soviet Era collective farm, the Kolkhoz. Lindos olhos❤️ Etiópia #Repost @rezaphotography (@get_repost) ・・・ Encounters #Ethiopia We made up a rather motley crew: six youths from six different continents, twenty-four young Ethiopians – some orphans, some from disadvantaged backgrounds – and assistants from UNICEF. The first group were the winners of an international photography contest launched by UNICEF and Sony and coordinated by the World Photography Association. The theme was the Rights of Children, and I was leading it, along with David Beckham. The winners won the chance to participate in one of my workshops, conducted in Ethiopia, along with twenty-four young Ethiopians who had been presented with cameras. Our happy group set off, trying to share moments that would build bridges between cultures, social classes and destinies. All of them shared this apprenticeship in photography and their view of the world around them. In a little village with houses made of beaten earth, natural light illuminates this girl’s face and intensifies the lively colors of her clothes and the rooster in her hands, transforming her into a princess full of grace, immortalized by these photographers in training. This unique exhibition sheds light on the incredible assimilation of diverse religious groups all driven by the desire to share in a mutual respect that is not present in other countries. A young woman’s face reflects the soft glow of candlelight as she prays and honors the legend of Saint George’s slaying of the dragon. Saint George, a 3rd century Saint from Palestine, is celebrated by Muslims and Christians alike. In Azerbaijan’s northern district bordering Georgia, the ancient Caucasian-Albanian Church accepts both Azerbaijani Muslims and Christian Georgians. These two very different religious communities come together as one to celebrate what they call the Kurmukoba festival. Most participants buy ten home-made beeswax candles and participate in a short pilgrimage up the steep hill to the church. Some of the candles are lit during the hike and are stuck to the side of the mountain. The remaining candles are lit inside the church; however, one may not enter the church until having circled around it three times, kissing its wall and praying at each of its four corners. Witnessing the private sorrow #Afghanistan The noise of war invades my mind. If I force myself to blot out all visual memories, if I compel myself to concentrate and listen to nothing but the sounds of war, then, like a blind man, I am submerged in an entirely different experience. The sounds buried in my memory are numerous: the rustling steps of combatants advancing quickly, the menacing drone of airplanes preparing to release their bombs, ear-shattering bombardments, rocket launchers, machine guns reloaded before a burst of gunfire, the bullets whizzing by, announcing that death is near, the heavy crunching sound of a slow, sad exodus through the snow And the voices, the voices of war? They tear into your soul, leaving behind countless scars. In the darkness of night, they recount the suffering of those we’ve met and whose stories we’ve heard: the cries of a hungry baby; the terse orders of a doctor trying to stave off death in his field hospital, the silence of a child who has witnessed the horrors of war, the desperate prayer of a woman who has lost everything… I will never forgot that night in Dasht-e-Ghala it wasn’t loud. It was a murmur. A moan evoking both the sorrowful plea and the soothing lullaby of a mother for her little one pierced the silent shadows. In their humble home, the little sister was witnessing the heartbreaking scene. The mother sat at the side of her son, holding him in her arms, gently caressing him. Her only son, wounded in battle, had just breathed his last. He was only twenty years old. A few hours still lay ahead of them before their inevitable separation. All night long, she continued her plaintive monologue for him, just for him.
